gear explanation
The right kind of gear is essential to the horse related sport one chooses. Despite what some many think, not all riding gear is appropriate to every horse sport. Certain sports need certain tack to accommodate the needs of the desired activities.

dressage
For dressage, one must have the proper gear to be successful. For instance, the rider must have: an appropriate top hat, a collared shirt, riding breeches, a top coat, presentable tall boots, along with normal riding tack. Different from normal horseback riding, dressage requires a more formal look. Dressage is a very sophisticated and serious sport, but one must remember to always have fun.

jumping
Jumping is more laid back then dressage. However, a lot of the gear is very similar. Some of the common gear is: a saddle, boots, breeches, gloves, helmet, etc. Jumping doesn't really require a lot of special equipment, just a determined rider.

barrel racing
Barrel racing has a lot of blingged out gear to go along with it. For example: sequenced shirts, matching colors where saddle pads, saddles, boots, and clothes are concerned. Bedazzled bridles, harnesses, and saddles as well. Even though barrel racing involves a lot of sparkly tack, it isn't all just a walk in the park. So to and end, don't be fooled by all of the blinggy equipment.
